Living with persistent pain – where do medicines fit in?

A new booklet has been produced by Live Well with Pain which it is hoped will prove to be an invaluable addition to the self-management toolkits of people living with persistent pain as well as the practitioners who support them.
Living with persistent pain – where do medicines fit in? answers many of the questions often asked by people who are taking medicines for their persistent pain.
The booklet provides a useful introduction to what persistent pain is and what we know about why it happens.
It looks at why pain medicines are often prescribed for pain, and how potentially they can be helpful as part of an overall pain management plan. The booklet also describes the common problems people experience with these medicines and explains how, for many people, medicines that were originally given to reduce pain, often do not do that at all.
There is a clear summary of the circumstances in which a person might consider reducing their pain medicines, emphasising the need to do this slowly and with professional support.
The booklet concludes with advice on other ways of living well with pain, highlighting some of the proven self-management techniques that will be familiar to readers of this newsletter such as pacing, becoming more active and developing a healthy sleep routine.
